Seed germination

INFLUENCE OF GIBBERELLIC ACID ON SEED GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTH OF SOLANUM VIRGINIANUM (SYN. S. SURATTENSE): AN IMPORTANT MEDICINAL PLANT OF THE INDIAN ARID ZONE

Solanum surattense is an important constituent of well known Ayurvedic drug “Dasmula” and “Arkadhi”. All plant parts are used in Ayurveda. The seed paste is applied on toothache and seed powder is smoked in asthma. The plant is very prickly diffuse, procumbent, often becomes perennial reaching a spread of a meter or so under luxuries conditions., Three types of flower bearing plants i.e. dark purple, light purple and white were observed, which differs in their density and colour. The density of white-flowered plants is very low and rarely found in natural habitats. In the present investigations, fresh seeds of S. surattense showed maximum germination percentage, root and shoot lengths with 5 mg l-1 GA3, while one year old seeds showed in 50 mg l-1 GA3.The results of Germination value and Vigour Index did not show any definite trend.

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT MILK SAMPLES ON SEED PRIMING OF VIGNA RADIATA (L.) R. WILCZEK

The milk is very useful part of human diet, because it has good nutritive values as it containsessential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper andproteins(casein, lactalbumin and lactoglobulin) as reported from milk of different cattle like cow (CW), goat(GT), buffalo (BF) and camel (CL). Because of these nutritional qualities, itfound suitable in farming for pretreatment of seeds before sowing which is called as "seed priming". In current study we carried out the effectof different milk samplesas seed priming treatment resulting in enhanced the seed germination of Vigna radiata(up to 100%), increase the biomassand influence the vegetative parameters like root-shootlength. Highest root length of 6.90 cm and 7.42 cm was noticed with CW milk (100% concentration) and GT (100% concentration) respectively. Highest biomass of root (0.34 gm)after treatment with goat milk (100% concentration) and shoot (0.93 gm) treated with CW milk (50% concentration) is observed. Total chlorophyll content was found (5.04 µg/ml) with BF milk (100% concentration) and protein content of565.13 µg/mlis observed after treatment with BF milk (50% concentration). Presence of magnesium and copper in milk is considered as useful for better seed germination after seed priming.
